What a surprising plot twist! My mum’s BMW dealer offered to put in a generic Din radio, making her loose all the functions of the on board computer thingie. AND THEN SEE IF THE CULPRIT REALLY IS THE AMP! Which would cost €550 to replace. So they want to rip a lot of stuff out, do some (probably) irreversible modifications, only to see if their first assumption is right. No thank you! Unfortunately, we still have no idea how to give her the possibility to listen to music back. DIY is out of the question as I won’t see the car before x-mas.

Kinda related: My Volvo dealer is being useless to me as well...

I have an extended warranty on my C30 but it just so happens that none of my issues are covered...

Its really sad that you can’t trust these dealers...

Tell me about it. I’m glad I got the bumper to bumper warranty with the Optional seals and gaskets plan. Why is it not included in the first place?! Saved me 800 dollars last visit to the dealer.

I would think you could get a used factory head unit on ebay and have a shop install it. In my E46 this is about a 10 minute job, no exaggeration. I know it’s not exactly the same, but these cars have a lot in common with my E46... so long as the head unit is the same as the one you’re taking out it should be very simple.

Check BMW forums, create a post describing the problem. Maybe it’s something easy and there might be someone willing to physically help out. Especially if you mention a modest financial compensation (no cure, no pay) is available.

There are lots of people who love these cars and there are a lot that take them apart as well. Knowledge and parts should be available in abundance.

Another option would be to find a garage/shop specialized in older BMWs. NOT a dealer. Slight hyperbole: dealers brainlessly replace, garages fix.
